Meditation and Everyday Anxieties

By: Rosie Leach

I love having meditation techniques for everyday uses.

I have a lifelong fear of the dentist even when it’s a simple cleaning. I cannot watch movie scenes of tooth removals. They make me cringe.

Recently, I developed an abscess in a tooth with severe pain. My doctor suggested it was not a sinus infection, as I had hoped, but a tooth that was infected. She was right, of course. Through all the dentist visits – three of the four are in the past now – I used my spiritual techniques to help me rise above my fear. I practiced grounding, centering and focusing in present time.

During this, my first ever root canal procedure, I had difficulty getting enough air due to all the equipment in my mouth. This was really scary. Plus, I kept remembering horror stories from other people in whom the anesthetic did not work to prevent the pain. As I grounded, centered in my head, and brought my attention into the present, my breath slowed and my body relaxed. The techniques did not eliminate the fear entirely, but my body relaxed enough that I was able to lay relatively still during the procedures with two different dentists.

Now I have more trust in myself to deal with my everyday anxieties.
